Tantalum

Tantalum and Niobium commonly occur together in the iron -containing minerals columbite (FeNb2O6) and tantalite (FeTa2O6). Tantalum with niobium, manganese and iron form the oxides manganocolumbite and manganotantalite. Tantalum is found with calcium, solium and fluorine in the oxide mineral microlite. Tantalum is found with uranium, yttrium, cerium and titanium in the complex oxide mineral euxenite. Tantalum is found with niobium and aluminum in the oxide mineral simpsonite. Tantalum is found with niobium, manganese and iron in the oxide mineral tapiolite. An oxide of antimony and tantalum is stibiotantalite.

Tantalum carbide, TaC, is a very hard substance which is used for making high-speed cutting tools.
