Train from Grutchalp to Murren

This one-car electric train ran between Grutchalp and Murren along the top of the cliff. We chose to walk the first leg from Grutchalp south to Murren, taking about two hours on the trail. Then we took the train back to Grutchalp.

The background of mountains seen are on the other side of the deep canyon. June 5, 1967

The Eiger, Monch, and Jungfrau

From the beginning of the trail we got terrific views of the mountains, including the Eiger, Monch and Junfgfrau. They were almost completely snowclad and so bright that you could hardly look at them. June 5, 1967

Footpath Approaching Murren

We took about two hours on the trail to Murren - surely two of the most memorable hours that we have ever spent. There was every variety of mountain scenery - green pastures dotted with flowers, green forest land with patches of snow, rushing streams with snow reaching to their edges, steep cliffs, and always the magnificent white mountain outline to our left across the narrow valley. The small electric train which ran between Grutchalp and Murren traveled right along the edge of the cliff as shown here. It gave grand views of the Eiger and the Monch as well as the Jungfrau.

Flowers in snow, snow on mountains.
