Lauterbrunnen Valley from Wengen

This view of the Lauterbrunnen valley shows how deep and narrow it is. We were on the east cliff, after having walked along the west cliff to Murren yesterday. Three of the waterfalls from the west cliff are visible. I believe the nearest one is the Staubbach Falls close to our campground.

We had taken the mountain railway up to Wengen, a little village sitting on the east wall fo the canyon. From here you get the full panorama of mountains from the Jungfrau around to the Breithorn and beyond. The valley was in shadow when we went up, but the peaks were glistening in the sun. Composite View of Lauterbrunnen Valley

The contrast between snowy mountain and shadowed valley was so great in this slide that I scanned it twice and overlaid the mountains on top of the view of the valley.

After visiting Grindelwald, we drove back to Lauterbrunnen and took the mountain railway up to Wengen, a little village sitting on the east wall fo the canyon. It is obviously a resort village. The view of the valley is excellent and you get the full panorama of mountains from the Jungfrau around to the Breithorn and beyond. The valley was in shadow when we went up, but the peaks were glistening in the sun. June 6, 1967

Wall of the Lauterbrunnen Valley

Back to our campsite for one last night in this fantastic valley. The formidable walls which rose to the east and west of us had numerous cascades like the one shown tumbling down the rock face. June 6, 1967
