Closer View of Finero, ItalyFinero was a fascinating town in the Italian mountains, and serves as a example of the towns we encountered. Along the winding one-lane dirt road across the mountains of northern Italy we found several compact Italian villages and towns which looked like they had been there forever. They had well-built rock and masonry buildings, always a prominent central church, and a compact structure which would make it practical to walk to any part of the town. June 9, 1967 |

Man and Woman Carrying Firewood? On the narrow streets of Finero, we came across this astonishing scene. I don't know what we expected about the status of women in Italy, but this guy in front carries a tiny load while the woman in rear carries a back-breaking load of limbs! We concluded that he either had a bad back or a bad heart. Finero was a fascinating town in the Italian mountains, and serves as a example of the towns we encountered. Finero, Italy With Cable ConveyanceLooking back on Finero, we saw this red box being moved along a cable over the valley. We saw a lot of such cable devices for moving materials over the mountainous terrain. After experiencing how slow it was to get from place to place on the winding mountain road, it made a lot of sense. This view also shows the smaller chapel sitting up on the ledge above the village, and we wondered about its history. June 9, 1967 |
