Reflection on Genesis 1A. Cressy Morrison, Ph.D. Chemistry, in "Man Does Not Stand Alone", 1944This is the original chaos of an unformed earth. The oceans were mostly in the sky, as impenetrable clouds, and no light could reach the earth. The clouds were cleared away. The earth had cooled, the rotation of the earth made night and day. Out of the waters that covered all the earth rose the continents, and the dry land appeared, and above the earth, the atmosphere. Note that vegetation is mentioned before animal life. The sun and moon became visible through the clouds and as the clouds finally cleared, the stars appeared, "also". All moving life originated in the water, and the firmament of heaven is the atmosphere. Animals are now on earth after the seas had been populated. All this has come to pass, and man has dominion.

Chance and necessity can't build a codeA powerful case can be made that such a formal code process only arises from intelligence. "Formal algorithmic prescriptive information (PI) is the key to any successful computer program, including the programs within life. ... PI involves formal choices at decision points that cannot be generated by randomness or law(necessity)." Johnson, Programming of Life, p39 "Biological information is not a substance ... biological information is not identical to genes or to DNA (any more than the words on this page are identical to the printers ink visible to the eye of the reader). Information, whether biological or cultural, is not a part of the world of substance." Hoffmeyer and Emmeche, 2005 "For prescription to be realized, the destination of any message must have knowledge of the source's alphabet, rules and cipher. The destination must also possess the ability to use the cipher. ... But when it comes to life's syntax, semantics and pragmatics, we fanatically insist for metaphysical reasons that the system is purely physical. No empirical, rational, or prediction-fulfillment support exists for this dogma." David Abel, Semiotica, Jan 2009.

TranscriptionAccording to Karp, the RNA polymerase is capable of adding 20 to 50 nucleotides per second to the growing mRNA chain. Electron microscope images suggest that there can be over a hundred RNA polymerases operating simultaneously. So the cell nucleus is like a programmed factory for mRNA with over 100 parallel assembly stations. Each station can build a 400 unit mRNA chain in 10 to 20 seconds!

Agency and Information at the Origin of LifePullen's definition of life: a system of chemicals possessing molecular knowledge and a mechanism to implement this knowledge in such a way that the system can survive long enough to replicate itself. All these processes appear to require both information and agency. Information is not enough without systems to utilize it. Energy is not enough to construct complex information-bearing molecular structures - and in fact works against such structures unless there is a system in place to use the energy constructively.
