Redhead Woodpecker Feeds Her Offspring

July 4, 2009

The big redhead woodpecker is one of our favorite visitors to the bird feeders, so it was a double treat to see her feed her youngster, who looks bigger than she is!

Mom and babe would fly to the tree, and babe would hang on the tree, fluttering his wings expectantly as mom flew down to get some suet to come and feed him. They ranged a long way up and down the tree in this process.

This was a hungry youngster, and this process went on for 20 to 30 minutes.
