1959 South Cobb 60th Anniversary

September 28, 2019

We gathered at the Freeman Poole Senior Center for the 60th Anniversary celebration of the 1959 graduating class from South Cobb High School.

Thanks to the Reunion Committee of Zandra James Turner (Chairwoman), Virginia Beavers (Memory table), Donald Hunter, Joe Daniell, Phyllis Deeter Barber, Sue Scroggins Chastain, and William Davis. And thanks to Ron Wallace for presiding.

We are always glad to welcome Betty Gray to the reunions. With her are Brenda Duncan Nave, Myrtice Anderson Henderson, Phyllis Deeter Barber and Faye Rice Harris.

We had a celebration cake in addition to peach cobbler!

Sue Scroggins Chastain introduces our first special speaker, former Governor Roy Barnes, a native of our area and a 1966 graduate of South Cobb High School.

Roy shared a number of stories about his experiences as Governor of Georgia. They ranged from wee-hour calls at the Governor's mansion about serious police crises to crazy jokes that the legislators played on each other when the legislature was in session.

General Tom McCullough, Retired U.S. Army, is a resident of our area now and was invited to speak to us by Donald Hunter. From his long military career he spoke to us about a program to educate high-school dropouts that was initiated in Georgia and spread over the country. He also told of his experience with assisting the former Soviet state of Georgia, contributing significantly to the ability of that Georgia to remain free of Russian domination.

Our third speaker was Betty Gray, who spoke to us briefly about continuing to learn and be creative. She was this class's Sponsor for their senior year, the senior English teacheer, and has attended every one of this class's reunions. They always joke with her a lot, and leading up to her introduction were yet more Betty Gray stories, that they titled "Shades of Gray". There is a Patch article about her 50-Plus Years as a South Cobb Educator. She was the first female High School Principal in Cobb County. She was elected to the Cobb County School Board and served there 16 years.

We enjoyed all the visiting and conversation during the afternoon. Here are Billy Davis, Curtis Daniel, Judith Keith Poston and Brenda Duncan Nave, with Joe Daniel at right.

Brenda says farewell to former Governor Roy Barnes, who is a native of our area and has spoken at our church on occasion. We always share with him about our fellowship with his older brother Ray Barnes who comes to our church and whom we have known well for many years.
