Hurricane Ida

August 27-30, 2021

Hurricane Ida made landfall near New Orleans on August 29. It took out the main power supply lines crossing the Mississippi River with the loss of power for nearly all of New Orleans. We were relieved to hear that Jordan and Ashleigh made it safely out to home in Pearl River for the intense part of the storm. It took out power for both Ashleigh's LSU Medical School and Jeff's Seminary. Jeff spent several days on police duty secured in an underground facility in Slidell. This is looking back from several months later, and we are grateful that our family suffered no significant damage from the storm.

As Chaplain for the Slidell Police Department, Jeff usually has prayer with the Slidell Police group on Friday afternoon before they go our for the evening shift. I think this was on Friday, August 27 as Hurricane Ida was approaching the Louisiana coast. Note the position of the hurricane on the screen behind the police, headed straight for New Orleans. It was a Category 4 hurricane, the worst since Katrina in 2005. Wikipedia quotes its damage as $75 billion.
