Curite

Pb6.5(UO2)16O16(OH)12(H2O,OH)4

This sample of curite is displayed in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Curite is an oxide mineral of uranium and lead with the composition Pb6.5(UO2)16O16(OH)12(H2O,OH)4. The sample at left is about 12 cm across and is from Shinkolobwe mine, Shaba, D.R. Congo. It is described as curite with kasolite and soddyite.

The orange color is similar to that of the radioactive fiestaware dishes, so perhaps this mineral is one of those used to get the dramatic orange color.
