DNA Replication

The DNA of a cell must replicate itself exactly if the cell is to divide and make a copy of the entire cell. The replication is assisted by "unzipping" enzymes that separate the two strands of the double helix structure of DNA. A new double-stranded structure is created by the attachment of nucleotides from the cell to the complementary nucleotides on the separated strands. When the replication is complete the "unzipped" strands resume their bonded double helix structure.
