What is the role of plate tectonics in the habitability of the Earth?

Only a recent part of our understanding of the Earth, plate tectonics apparently plays an important role on the long-term habitability of the Earth. It helps act as a thermostat to keep the Earth in the liquid range of water, is responsible for mountain and continent building, and makes possible the magnetic field of the Earth that shields life from damaging cosmic rays.
