Optoisolators

One circuit can be effectively isolated electrcially from another with the use of an optoisolator where the signal from one circuit is used to modulate an LED. The image of the signal in the form of an intensity modulated light beam is received by a phototransistor. The information is therefore transmitted without any direct electrical connection.
