Jesus Confronts the Pharisees

April 13, 2001

Chief Pharisee:"By what authority are you doing these things? And who gave you this authority?"

Jesus: "I will also ask you a question. If you answer me, I will tell you by what authority I am doing these things. John's baptism - where did it come from? Was it from heaven or from earth?"

The pharisees' inability to answer brings laughter from the crowd and the disciples.

Pharisee:"Jesus! If you are truly a prophet of God, then show us a sign ... in the heavens!"

Jesus:"You wicked generation! You ask for a sign, but none will be given except the sign of the Prophet Jonah. For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the great fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and nights in the heart of the earth."

Money Changer: "Teacher, Teacher, I have a question for you .... Is it right to pay taxes to Caesar or not?"

Jesus: "You hypocrites! Why are you trying to trap me? Show me the coin used for the tax."

"Whose portrait is this? And whose inscription?"

All: "Caesar's"

Jesus: "Then give to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's."

"Watch out for the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and be greeted in the marketplace, and have the most important seats in the synagogues and places of honor at banquets."

Let the little children come unto me!
