Resort Village of Murren on the Cliff

Murren perches on the edge of a cliff which drops probably 1500 ft to the Lauterbrunnen valley below. The most prominent structure is the cable car station which brings people up from the valley below and dispatches skiiers on up the mountain in winter. June 5, 1967

South End of Lauterbrunnen Valley

From the village of Murren high on the western cliff side of the Lauterbrunnen valley, we got this view of the south end of the valley toward Stechelberg.

We found the small cabins on the steep hillsides interesting. They had rows of rocks lined up across their roofs - we never quite understood why.

Also, we had visions of skiing down these steep slopes with the knowledge that there was a 1500 ft cliff down there somewhere - pretty scary! June 5, 1967

Cable Car With Eiger in the Background

We watched the cable car from the Lauterbrunnen valley approach the cable car station in Murren on the top of the cliff. In the background was the dazzling white image of Mt. Eiger. June 5, 1967

Wooden Church in Murren

Murren is a very nice little village. The view of the alps from its vantage point on the edge of the high cliff is magnificent. There is a beautiful little wooden church in the center of the village. The Shilthorn cable railway and the mountain railway are the only mechanical means of access to the village. There are small electric carts in the village for deliveries. June 5, 1967

Wengen From the Train

We caught the small electric train back from Murren to Grutchalp after having walked to Murren. We got this view of the village of Wengen on the opposite cliff across the deep valley. The train provided some nice relaxing views after our long walk. June 5, 1967

Valley From the Descending Train

We caught the small electric train back from Murren to Grutchalp after having walked to Murren. From there we took the steep rack railway back down to Lauterbrunnen. This view is from that rack railway train on the way down the cliff, a drop of over 2200 feet. The houses seen here are on the outskirts of Lauterbrunnen. June 5, 1967
