Students Present "Carl R. Nave Award"

July, 2005

At a social for the Physics and Astronomy Department, the students surprised me with the presentation of this award, establishing the "Carl R. Nave Award" as a continuing award by the The Society of Physics Students to honor a faculty member in Physics.

I certainly liked the idea of having an award initiated by the students with recipient likewise chosen by the students. I was very honored that they chose me for this year. Having taught the Modern Physics sequence for several years, I had taught most of the advanced undergraduates in at least one course.

It was certainly a memorable time for me since I was retiring at the end of this term with 40 years of service, even though I taught for another 11 years after retirement. I had also just been notified that I had been chosen for the "Merlot Classic Award" for my HyperPhysics website which had now been online for seven years.

It was a whirlwind time because we almost immediately left for Nashville for the Merlot Conference. The day after we returned, we left for Salt Lake City and the American Association of Physics Teachers meeting. Just a few days after we returned, Hurricane Katrina struck New Orleans and that involved us for weeks. So mine was not a calm retirement.
