Tornado Hits Downtown Atlanta

While we were at Bent Tree in a rainstorm on Friday night March 14, a tornado ripped right through downtown Atlanta, doing a lot of damage to the highrise buildings in the city center.

At left you can see the multiple windows blown out of the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel, the Georgia Pacific Building, and the Equitable Building. The old Baptist Tabernacle at center bottom was also badly damaged.

On Thursday, March 20, it was a very clear day so I brought the camera and decided to take a walk after class around the main tornado damage area.My class was in the Aderhold Classroom Building, which was right in the middle of the damage area, but most of the damage was higher up. The Aderhold building reportedly had some cracked windows, but I didn't see any damage. At right is the top of the Westin from Olympic Park. The whole area was so fascinating that I walked for an hour and a half.

The new Omni International Hotel suffered major glass damage all the way up its tower. It had probably been open less than a year. Mark's pirate ship project was displayed on the fourth floor of this hotel last year, and it was at one of the first big meetings in the hotel.

The bridge from the Omni International to the Omni/CNN complex lost all of its glass, and the CNN center lost most of the glass on its western side. Nearly all the windows were either covered with plywood or tarped.
