January Snow with Winter Storm Cora
January 10, 2025
For about ten days we had been warned by the weather services that there might be a time of wintery precipitation coming. But for the first few days of the year the weather was cold but very clear and beautiful.
| The skies were crystal clear and we got some nice views of Jupiter and Mars and the Moon on the clear nights. January 3 |
Rod enjoyed feeding the birds and watching the winter birds visit along with our familiar friends. We also see this friendly squirrel often. January 9
As we approached January 10 we heard more and more confidence from the weather forecasters that a major winter event was approaching us and the final words we got on a very clear January 9 day was that a freezing mix would enter Georgia from the west at about 5am.
When I woke up and looked out our west-facing bedroom window at 7:40am, I was amazed to find that the storm had not only reached Georgia but had already put down a substantial covering of snow!
| When I looked southward out the bathroom window I was again surprised by what looked like a smooth 3-inch blanket of snow on the attached shed roof and over all the back yard. |
This view of the back yard at about 8:30 showed a pleasant smooth snow covering. A couple of birds have approached the back bird feeder.
| The view across the snow from our kitchen table area was also very pleasant. |
One of the groupings of birds we saw was a flock of redwing blackbirds. Over weeks we have seen up to a couple of dozen of them, but this small flock came back in the snow.
| One way to show the snow depth was this view eastward from our breakfast table. The snow is on our bird watering dish and a flower pot. |
Though lacking resolution, this gives an idea of our variety of bird visitors. The three bluebirds on the suet feeder are regulars. On the ground are black-backed ... who visit us in midwinter.
| This snowy view to the southeast contains five of our backyard bird feeders. We enjoyed the abundance of birds coming to feed in the snow. |
This is a snowy view from a front window.
We were glad to see the children in Awana for the new year |
