Article about Leland Bunch in student magazine "The Elevator"

1915

Leland Bunch attended the Western Kentucky State Normal School in Bowling Green, Ky. "The Elevator" was their somewhat satirical student publication. Leland attracted their attention for an article in this February, 1915 edition. By that time, he had finished his work there and had been superintendent of two schools at Livermore and Paducah.

Note that someone, probably Aunt Pearl, had written on the cover of this preserved issue "Keep for Edgar Leland to read when he is old enough." Edgar's middle name was taken from his Uncle Leland.

Historical details from this article:

  • Attended school in Franklin, Ky and taught some rural sessions.
  • 1907-10 Western Kentucky State Normal School, Bowling Green, Ky.
  • 1910-13 Superintendent of Livermore School
  • 1913 McKinley School in Paducah

The Western Kentucky State Normal School had just been formed at the time when Leland attended it. In previous years, there had been a "Normal Department" in the higher education institutions to meet the need for training teachers for the "Common Schools". There had been considerable controversy and discussion, but it was decided to initiate Normal Schools with the specific goal of training teachers, like current Teachers Colleges as it appears to me. In Kentucky, two such Normal Schools were founded shortly after 1900: the one at Bowling Green and another at Richmond.
