The National Eisteddfod in Bala, Wales

August 10, 1967

We drove to Bala for the initiation ceremony for the Gorsedd, or Society of Welsh Bards, at the National Eisteddfod.

This is part of the recessional from the ceremony in Bala. August 10.

The National Eisteddfod is held in different locations each year according to the records we found. Bala is noted as one of the villages with the highest percentage of fluent Welsh speakers.

Bala is a small Welsh village about 50 miles from Beaumaris. We went to see the ceremony of the "Chairing of the Bard", which is the highlight of the week of speeches, songs, pageants, and poetry competitions, all conducted in the Welsh language. Above, the Arch Druid is preceded by the bearer of the seven foot sword.

With the Arch Druid in his ceremonial place, we understood this to be a part of the initiation ceremony for new Druids.

This was one impressive sword used in the initiation ceremony.
