Threonine

Threonine is an amino acid and belongs to the class which has neutral R-groups. It has a side chain containing a hydroxyl group, making it a polar, uncharged amino acid. It is hydrophilic.

Threonine is synthesized from aspartate in bacteria such as E. coli.

It is a precursor of glycine, and can be used as a prodrug to reliably elevate brain glycine levels.

* Amino acids which are essential amino acids which cannot be made by the human body and, therefore, must be obtained in the diet.
