Lepidolite

K(Li,Al)3(Si,Al)4O10(F,OH)2

This sample of lepidolite is displayed in the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History. Lepidolite is a silicate mineral which contains lithium, potassium and fluorine. The composition is K(Li,Al)3(Si,Al)4O10(F,OH)2. The sample at left is about 15 cm across and is from Virgem de Lapa, Minas Gerais, Brazil. It is described as lepidolite with microcline.

Lepidolite is a member of the mica mineral family. The term lepidolite is sometimes used for any lithium-bearing mica. Most lepidolite comes from pegmatites, where is is sometimes mined for lithium. Manganese impurities can give it a purple color.

This sample is from Brown Derby pegmatite, Gunnison County, Colorado. Each piece is about 10 cm wide. They show the purple color from manganese content.
