On the Blueridge Parkway

June 8, 2002

One of the highlights of the Parkway is the view of the tiered mountains extending to the horizon in the blue haze.

These views are from Licklog Ridge, at a lookout posted to be 4602 ft altitude.

The mountain laurels were in bloom at the higher altitudes, whereas they have been gone for weeks in north Georgia.

A variety of wildflowers bloomed on the roadsides.

In the higher part of the Blueridge it was hard to pass an overlook because each was so spectacular. But after having taken about 4 hours to travel 40 miles, it was clear that we were going to have to get off the Parkway and go back to the Interstate if we were going to get within striking distance of Washington this day. We needed to go to Marion, so the signs at this intersection helped a lot to know which way to go.
