Hawk Visit

July 4, 2022

Brenda glanced into the back yard and called me to see this large hawk sitting on our old bluebird house.

It had all the markings of a redtail hawk, but nothing red or reddish brown that we could see. From all the redtail hawk pictures I could find on the web, the only ones I saw which had this kind of coloration were classified as juveniles. If this is a juvenile, it is certainly a big one.

We were confident that the hawk could see us since we were standing inside the big window. But it didn't seem at all alarm and just sat there for several minutes with us looking at it.

After sitting for several minutes, it flew over to the birdbath and looked around from there.

After looking around a bit, it flew up to an oak tree at the side of our yard.

After sitting on the small limb on the side of the tree for a time, it took flight down into the back yard and sat on top of the metal frame that holds our large bird feeder. Although our back yard is typically busy with many birds, they see the hawks before we do and there was not a small bird in sight.

After sitting for a while on top of the metal frame, the hawk flew down and just walked around in the grass of the back yard.

This redtail was seen in a tree across our street on Feb 7, 2008.
This redtail was seen in our back yard on March 10, 2015.
This redtail was seen in our back yard on June 2, 2020.
