Family of Cardinals at Jeff's

May19-June1, 2019

On May 19, the cardinal, Susan, who has been visiting the porch at Jeff's brought his partner and they made a nest. We all kept close watch on the eggs and the mama bird and on May 24, the first egg hatched. [This html document and the commentary was provided by Jordan.]

After the first bird had hatched, he didn't move around too much and we were all worried about him and watched for the mom to feed him. The front door was closed down and the whole family was instructed to use the garage until the family of birds moved out. They had nested in one of Darla's hanging baskets.

A day after the first one, the rest of the baby birds hatched. They started getting some downy feathers and looked cuter.

Jordan asked her friends to submit names for the baby birds via Instagram and then held a poll for voting over the names. She had been posting pictures of the birds and their progress and they gained many fans.

The names that were voted on were Peach Mango, Jimothy, and Pounce. Peach Mango is the oldest and is pictured at the top, where Jimothy has his eyes open in the middle and Pounce is on the bottom.

Their feathers came in quick and the babies were expected to fledge within 9 to11 days of hatching.

This is Peach Mango pictured. The babies were gaining confidence and we even saw Susan start to nudge them out of the nest!

As expected, 10 days after the first baby hatched, they all left the nest. They stayed close by for the two days after leaving and learned to hop and fly around in a bush with their mom and dad.
