Jeff's Knee Replacement Surgery

Jeff had been planning and preparing for months for the prospect of having knee replacement surgery for both knees. The prospect of having both knees done at the same time was a tough decision for both he and the doctors. More commonly, one knee at a time is done, but Jeff went through thorough preparation in diet and exercise and he and the doctor came to the decision to proceed with both knees. Jeff had the time out of teaching duties for the summer.

The surgery went well and at 4:44pm the nurses had gotten Jeff up to stand on the legs with the two new knees. The image below left shows a side view of the parts inserted and I guess the right view is from the front.

At 5 pm Jeff had been placed in a chair. The abundant wraps cover the sutures. The legs look very straight, and we understand that they used images and a framework to make sure they were straight.

At home two days after surgery this repetitive ice water treatment was an important part of the therapy.

On June 9, 19 days after surgery, Jeff returned for the staple removal. By this time, he had been walking half-mile loops down to the end of Radio Road.

This side view makes the surgery look more remarkable. He had been through intensive physical therapy and had reached 120 degrees of knee bend. He had started back to swimming on a daily basis. He had found the flip turns awkward at first, but overall was pleased with the way swimming felt.
