Jeff and Mules on Bright Angel Trail

As Jeff headed down the Bright Angel Trail, we met a group of mules on the way up. The remarkable collection of switchbacks called the Bright Angel Trail descends from Grand Canyon Village on the south rim of the Grand Canyon. August 7, 1982.

Jeff Below Red Bluffs

Jeff is a couple of miles down the Bright Angel Trail and the red bluffs above him give an idea of how far we have descended on the twisting trail. Jeff Above the Big Z on Bright Angel Trail

Rod and Jeff hiked three miles down the Bright Angel Trail to the intersection which looks like a big Z. There was a water barrel there for the benefit of the longer distance hikers who were going on down to the Colorado River and the Phantom Ranch. This photo was scanned from a color negative an color corrected as well as I could, but it still gives a significant color balance difference from the previous picture which was scanned from a Kodachrome slide. August 7, 1982

Meeting a Mule Column on Bright Angel Trail

This photo was on the way up, and we were meeting a column of mules coming down from the top. We signed up on the backup list for such a mule trip, but there were four pages of backup signatures! You have to schedule a mule ride months ahead of time. Anyway, we enjoyed our hike. This view of the column of mules gives some perspective of the size of the bluff walls and how far we had come down on the switchbacks. August 7, 1982.
