Born November 25, 1844

This is the section of the book "Reminiscenses of the Speer Family", by John Grove Speer, on Marcus E. Speer, one of his sons.

p177 "

Marcus E. Speer and Family

"Marcus E. Speer was born in Decatur, Ills, November 25, 1844, grew to manhood inn Kentucky, and was married to Ida M. Souther, April 23, 1869, whose birthday was February 5, 1853. Their children are Albert M. Speer, born September 13, 1871; Susie E. Speer, born April 12, 1874; William Emory, born November 5, 1878; Ettie, the second daughter, born October 22, 1880; Herbert S., born April 27, 1885, and Edward M., born March 19, 1887."

"Emory Speer, second son of Marcus E. and Ida Speer, is an industrious, nice young man. he is at home with his parents and is employed in a hardware and grate establishment in Owensboro, Ky. Herbert, another son, and Edward, the youngest, are growing up to manhood and going to school, preparing for life's work. I hope they will all be useful and a help and consolation to their ever-kind and loving parents."

"Colonel Michael Souther, a much esteemed friend and school-mate of mine, was born on February 26, 1806, and Catherine Cloyd, to whom he was married, was born March 11, 1812. They were married September 21, 1830, on which occasion I stood up with him as best man. These are the parents of Ida M. Speer, their only surviving child. After their marriage they stayed with her mother, who still lingered on the shores of time; prostrated with the letting down of the nervous system, and who needed to be cared for; which was kindly done. Then they moved onto the farm where her father died and engaged in farming. After some years they rented the farm and went to Alton, Anderson County, and engaged in mercantile pursuits; then they again moved back. Having sold the home farm, they bought another near Brownsboro, on which they lives for several years. Selling this, they moved to Cowley County, Kansas, and bought land. Ida's health not being good they sold out and bought land in Kentucky and moved on it. They again sold that and bought property in Owensboro, where they now live."

John Grove Speer proceeds to write brief sections on the children of Marcus E. Speer:, Albert, Susie, and Etta.
