2000We entered the new millenium without a lot of fanfare, playing host to a group of youth from Bigbee Baptist Church in Amory, Mississippi. They stayed with us while attending the Youthlink conference which met at the World Congress Center. On January 14-15, Rod, Johnny Huffman and Mark Bryant took six of the younger RAs to Bent Tree for an overnight. It was a clear, cold night and we hiked them out on the road about 10:30 PM to look at the stars. We used binoculars to look at the stars to try to see more of their color. I had never seen the Pliades so clearly and Orion was dramatically placed. We hiked them up to the ice falls on Saturday, and they really enjoyed all the icicles. We saw five deer. Good trip for boys and adults. Boys going were Matthew Bryant, Jason Anderson, Alex Ayres, On the same weekend, Brenda went to Shocco Springs in Alabama for the ladies retreat led by Debbie Childers. There was a dramatic lunar eclipse on January 20, the brightest we have ever seen. The viewing conditions were excellent, and the moon was h igh in the sky at the time of the eclipse. On Sunday, January 23 we had a major ice storm which took out power out until late Monday night. It makes you appreciate your light and heat. We continued to be amused with the effort to find a bird feeder which will keep the squirrels out, but so far they have licked us every time. On Friday-Sunday, Jan 28-30, we had another ice storm. We got Brenda off to New Orleans on Friday morning to spend the weekend for Jordan's baby dedication service at the church. GSU closed down, so Rod went home. On March 3 at about midnight, Jeff and Darla and the girls rolled in from New Orleans. Ashleigh and Jordan had both developed remarkably. Mark was currently working on the set of the upcoming movie "Unshackled", the story of Harold Morris. Mark gave Rod a tour of the set on March 6. Rod and Brenda attended the Ga Tech BSU Alumni gathering at Lake Chatuge Lodge in Hiwassee on March 17-19. Rod played the role of Nicodemus in the Easter Pageant, as well as singing with the choir. We had an RA fishing and exploring trip to Sweetwater Park on April 1. Rod and Cookie Hanna made a jeb boat trip up Hell's Canyon in Idaho with faculty and students from Lewis and Clark State College. On the return trip over the snow-covered Idaho mountains, we got a good example of meandering streams in the snow. We had a block party and health fair at First Baptist Church, Mableton on May 6 Rod, Brenda and Mark made a trip to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands from May 27 to June 2. Jeff and family came for a visit on July 20 From July 28 to Aug 11, Rod and Brenda were in Canada for Rod's AAPT meeting. We visited Niagara Falls and rode the Maid of the Mist. We enjoyed a visit to the Butterfly Conservatory. On the weekend of September 22, Rod and Brenda went to Owensboro, KY to see Aunt Orvetta, who at 92 has just moved to the Carmel House there for better care. We visited with Boots, Edgar and Jewell as well. Jeff and family portrait RA recognition at First Baptist Church, Mableton Family gathering at Thanksgiving Family gathering with Moyles at Christmas |
