Don and Betty Hammonds Host Georgia Tech BSU Alumni Group

January 18, 2020

Thanks to Don and Betty Hammonds for arranging our Tech BSU gathering at Athens Pizza in Decatur on January 18. We had gathered there back in 2013 and it was again a pleasant place to gather. A recent gathering was at Nancy Bonds' on July 27 of 2019.

Gathered around the back table at Athens Pizza were Aubrey Bush, Andy and Alice Blake, Bob and Mildred Petty and Carol Bush.

We were delighted that Sue Woolf could join us. She was escorted by Babs and Frank Gudger, with out host Don Hammonds.

Everyone enjoyed the active fellowship in the section of Athens Pizza that they provided for us. Norman Petty talks with Tom Jones, Brenda Nave and Jane Strange hug Babs Gudger, and Betty and Don Hammonds enjoy fellowship with Sue Woolf.

It was a kind of friendly chaos with everyone moving around and visiting with each other. Babs Gudger, Faye Jones, Charles Griffin, Jane Strange, Betty Hammonds.

Andy and Alice Blake visit with longtime friend Aubrey Bush.

Betty Jones talks with Carol Bush, Brenda Nave talks with Nancy Bonds, and our hosts Don and Betty Hammonds in the background.
On one side of the table are Faye Jones, Brenda Nave and Jane Strange. On the other side are Tom Jones, Rod Nave and Leland Strange who are not nearly so pretty.
We had a wonderful conversation about the mission efforts Leland has seen in India where he has a large work force. Tom was familiar with the effort so we celebrated the strong Christian witness in India. Note that Jane is holding a copy of Tom's book, A Long Safari, which tells about his thirty years or so of mission work in Africa.

It was a wonderful time of fellowship around the room. Starting at bottom left and moving clockwise, we see Leland Strange, Norman Petty, Jane Strange, Mildred and Bob Petty. Above that are Barbara and Norman Petty, Brenda Nave, Faye and Tom Jones. At top left are Babs Gudger and Sue Woolf, then Nancy Bonds with Norman and Barbara Petty, then Nancy Bonds.

It is always a special blessing to be able to share fellowship with Sue Woolf, in center with Babs Gudger and Don Hammonds. Warren and Sue Woolf were our mentors in how to form a Christian community when we were students at Georgia Tech in the 1950s and 1960s. I treasure the descriptive phrase "just and intimate community" and it immediately brings to mind that BSU community at Georgia Tech under the leadership of Warren and Sue. Now we reckon that Sue is about ninety six, and still able to join in fellowship with us. In the photo above, clockwise from bottom left are Leland Strange and Sam Shelton, upper left Nancy Bonds, Norman Petty and Frank Gudger, top right Aubrey Bush, Andy and Alice Blake, bottom right Alice Blake, Bob and Mildred Petty, Carol Bush.

Our Georgia Tech BSU alumni group had gathered in 2018 in Toccoa, in Hiawassee in 2016, 2015, 2014 and before that for Warren's 90th birthday celebration in 2011. We had previous reunions there in 2010, 2007, 2005, and 2000. During 2013 we had gathered for Warren's Memorial Service and for Sue's 90th Birthday as well as a spring gathering at the Gudger's.

Atlanta area gatherings have been held in 2018 at Leland Strange's office and at the Petty's, 2017 at the Gudger's, 2015 at Folks Restaurant with the Alfords and at Franks at the Old Mill with the Normans, 2014 at the Petty's and at the Rollins' in Suches, in 2013 at Athens Pizza and at the Gudger's, in 2012 at the Hammonds' and at Nancy Bonds', 2011 at Mary Mac's, 2009 at Nancy Bonds' and at the Rollins', 2002 at the Nave's, 1981 at the Shelton's
